College Park, MD – Motivation and support come in many forms, including a cold nose and a warm heart. The University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) welcomed its newest staff member Canine Companions Facility Dog Samuel. Samuel, also known as Sammy, will assist handler Corporal Bart Brady during his work with the University of Maryland (UMD) community.
Since 1975, Canine Companions has bred, raised and expertly trained service dogs in over 40 commands designed to assist people with disabilities or to motivate and inspire clients with special needs. Samuel can pull toy wagons; push drawers closed and retrieve all kinds of items. He has specific commands that allow him to interact with members of the UMD community in a calm and appropriate way.
UMPD is internationally accredited and the primary law enforcement agency for UMD. We believe in the principles of community policing, and we provide services and programs that are personalized to meet the needs of our ever-evolving University of Maryland community.
As a 24/7 department, it is important for us to supplement already existing programs with additional resources. Adding a facility dog helps us expand and enhance our community outreach programs to the growing needs of our UMD community.
For over 50 years, Canine Companions has been enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by training and placing more than 8,600 service dogs with program graduates, including more than 350 dogs with military veterans and more than 2,000 dogs with children. The estimated cost of a highly trained Canine Companions facility dog like Samuel, and all follow up support, is $50,000, however each facility dog is provided at no cost. Canine Companions depends on the support of tens of thousands of donors and volunteers to match our facility with a service dog like Samuel entirely free of charge.
