Congratulations to MPO Dykstra and K9 Spud on their outstanding performance in the Iron Dog Competition on April 10, 2025. A competition that raises money for Spike’s K9.
They ran the course in 29 minutes and six seconds, earning them first in their age bracket and they had the second fastest time overall. The course is a three mile, off-the-grid obstacle course designed for K9s and their handlers to include mud pits, hill climbs, water crossings, shooting, apprehension, detection, and more!
“I’m very proud of Spud. He charged the course the same way he does everything, with energy and confidence. I’ve been given the perfect dog. I just have to hold on and tell him he’s doing great.”- MPO Dykstra
Spike’s K9 was founded in 2014 by retired Special Warfare Operator James Hatch. As a K9 handler on several deployments, James’ life was regularly spared by the work of K9s – one of the most memorable was Spike.
Spike’s K9 is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to the care and preservation of our nation’s working dogs. The fund provides access to quality training, medical cost assistance, and life-saving gear to active and retired working dogs under the service of the military, law enforcement, search and rescue, and other public safety organizations.
Congratulations once again to MPO Dykstra and K9 Spud for proudly representing UMPD at this event!
