Steering Wheel Lock Giveaway for Hyundai and Kia Owners

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and security at the University of Maryland, we continue to look for partnerships to help aid in our crime prevention efforts. Thanks to Hyundai Motor America, we are able to provide free steering wheel locks to Hyundai and Kia owners.

In 2023, like so many other jurisdictions, we saw a sharp increase in our motor vehicle theft reports. We went from six cases in 2022 to 31 cases in 2023. About half of our cases in 2023 involved a Hyundai and/or a Kia vehicle. We have received 12 reports of motor vehicle theft for 2024, in which three reports involved a Hyundai or a Kia vehicle.

While there have been continuous improvements for Hyundai and Kia owners, we know that additional safety measures, such as adding a steering wheel lock, only helps in preventing motor vehicle theft.

Members of the UMD community who own a Hyundai or Kia, can stop by the Pocomoke Building (7569 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, MD) from December 10 thru December 16, 2024, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., to receive a free steering wheel lock (while supplies last).

You must bring your UMD ID card and proof of vehicle ownership to receive a steering wheel lock.

We greatly appreciate Hyundai Motor America for the donation of over 300 steering wheel locks. To learn more about their efforts, please visit https://www.hyundaiantitheft.com/
