INCIDENT: Suspicious Activity

OCCURRED: February 17, 2025/ Approximately 2:22 a.m.

LOCATION: Eastbound University Boulevard before Metzerott Road, College Park, Maryland

UMPD CASE #: 2025-36749

BRIEF DETAILS:

On February 17, 2025, at approximately 2:22 a.m., the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) responded to the area of eastbound University Boulevard before Metzerott Road for the sound of gunfire.

Police arrived on scene and searched the area. Two empty shell casings were found in the roadway, not far from the speed camera. A Student Police Aide assigned to the gate house at Paint Branch Drive confirmed with police that they head the sound of gunfire. Officers continued to search the area, but did not find anything further.

At this time, there have been no reported injuries or damage by gunfire reported. Initial investigation indicates that the intended target of the shots was the speed camera. The shell casings were collected and submitted for evidence.

Officers will continue to patrol the area. If you observe suspicious activity or behavior, contact the police immediately by calling 911 or 301-405-3333.

The University of Maryland Police Department is investigating this incident.
