College Park, MD – The University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) has been awarded its 10th Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA®). This accomplishment represents the agency’s longstanding commitment to excellence, accountability, and professional policing standards.

The award, which went into effect on November 15, 2025, follows a comprehensive on-site assessment and public review process conducted by CALEA assessors. This milestone positions UMPD among a select group of agencies nationwide to reach their tenth consecutive meritorious award.

“This achievement reflects the dedication and professionalism of every member of our agency,” said Chief David B. Mitchell, JD. “Our continued accreditation demonstrates to our community that we are committed to operating with integrity, continually improving our services, and maintaining the highest level of trust.”

The Advanced Accreditation Program is recognized internationally as the gold standard in public safety. Earning this distinction requires agencies to demonstrate ongoing compliance with over 400 hundred standards, participate in regular reviews, and maintain transparent, community-centered operations.

“Reaching a 10th Advanced LE Accreditation is more than an administrative accomplishment,” said Lisa Church, UMPD Accreditation Manager and Policy Coordinator. “It shows that our agency has built—and sustained—a culture of professional standards, continual growth, and community engagement.”

Since 1996, UMPD has earned international accreditation from CALEA. Accreditation involves an in-depth examination of the agency’s administration and operations, and indicates that the department adheres to high standards of professionalism, excellence, and competence. UMPD takes great pride in knowing that it represents the very best in law enforcement.
